SEO is about LOW COMPETITION and HIGH SEARCH VOLUME

SEO is many things...none of which has to do with Seals, Easter Bunnies, or Octopuses. But the ridiculousness of the disinformation does illustrate a key component of all SEO: the best strategies favor low competition keywords and topics with high search volume.

We are confident that you already know SEO doesn't stand for Seals, Easter Bunnies, and Octopuses. We are also fairly confident most people reading this know it stands for Search Engine Optimization.

If you didn't know that, you're welcome :).

But here's the deal.

The phrases SEO and Search Engine Optimization are so general when it comes to search results they might as well be stand-ins for random words (like Seals, Easter Bunnies, and Octopuses).

No one wants to hear this, but trying to get on the first page of Google for a very general topic, whatever your business, is often an utterly meaningless task. You'd have better luck swinging at windmills.

It's best you realize this early on, or you'll waste precious time competing with other companies that will knock you out cold before you get in the ring (typically due to higher ad budgets - they're throwing money at their problem and it's currently working).

You aren't going to rank for these head on, which means you have to get crafty.

Find a series of niches you can dominate within the general gist of your services.

Don't try to compete for things you don't have a chance in hell at getting traffic for.

Things like SEO, Seals, Easter Bunnies, or Octopuses are going to be too general. Set your sights on something specific that solves a problem.

As a wise woman once said, keep your eye on the donut, not on the hole.

The Trick You Need To Learn

There's no free lunch, so please don't think we're selling you a tonic that will get rid of all that digitally ails you. Everything is predicated on hard work, whether you do it yourself or hire a company like us is entirely up to you.

But this isn't a magic show.

The real trick is to find out what associated keywords and topics are both low competition AND have a high search volume. Those are the real gems. With a little bit of research and elbow grease, you can laser focus on content that actually solves problems for people which are being overlooked by the plain vanilla advertising campaigns.

There are a number of ways to arrive at your low competition/high search volume gems. But step one for all of them is to reorient your mind to see niche solutions to general problems. If you're a plumber, and you want to win at the SEO game for plumbing in your area, a great gamble is to search for very specific fixes to general plumbing issues. Expand your thinking beyond "my kitchen sink is overflowing" to "how to check and empty your sink's j-trap". The latter topic is niche enough that you are far more likely to be able to compete for it, but the problem it solves (a clogged kitchen sink) is general enough that there is likely high search volume for it.
